BSc in Public Health

Background

BSc in Public Health focuses on improving and protecting the health of communities and populations. Unlike clinical healthcare programmes that focus on treating individual patients, Public Health focuses on preventing diseases, promoting healthy lifestyles and improving community wellbeing. Public Health professionals work to reduce disease outbreaks, improve sanitation, educate communities and develop health programmes that improve the quality of life within society.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a minimum of six (6) credits at IGCSE GCE O’Level, EGCSE or Matric level. Credits must include English Language and Mathematics with a minimum of Grade C or better in each.

Candidates must have credits in any two (2) of the following subjects: Biology, Physics, Science (Physics/Chemistry) and Biology. Applicants must also have credits in two (2) additional subjects or an equivalent recognized qualification.

Diploma Holders in Public Health (with a Credit or higher) may be considered for direct entry into Year 3.

All international qualifications must be verified by the relevant Education Qualifications Authority (EQA).

Course Structure

The course structure covers key areas such as introduction to public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health promotion and education, community health management, disease prevention and control, research methods, health policy and planning, public health law and ethics, occupational health, as well as project work and field attachment.

Graduates can work as public health officers, health promotion specialists, epidemiology assistants, community health coordinators, environmental health practitioners, research assistants,

and health Programme managers in government institutions, NGOs, hospitals, and international health organizations.
